Editorial: Content Theft

If you read other Second Life blogs, you're probably well aware that there is a lot of content theft going on in Second Life and that various clothing designers have been banding together to try to raise public awareness on this issue.

Most content theft in Second Life is of the most heinous sort-- using various hacks the item is duplicated exactly except for textures. There are other issues as well, such as people copying or imitating designs they've seen by less direct methods or using established business names or other logos.

It is this blog's policy to immediately remove any review that features an item copied or stolen from its legitimate creator. If we agree that the design has been substantially copied from another creator, we'll remove the review. If someone is using a brand name or logo without the creator's permission but the rest of the content is original, we'll remove the logos/name references and leave the rest of the review intact.

If you see something on this blog that you think has been copied or stolen, please inform pia, even if you're not the original content creator. Content creators deserve all our attention and support in this issue. While we might not agree every time because some similarities are accidental or a matter of the limits of Second Life and design function, i.e. there's only so many ways to bend a fork, we appreciate being informed so that we may investigate the matter. That being said, we are not investigative journalists here, we're just some people who review clothes, so go gently on us, 'k? pia cannot in good conscience act on anonymous comments, so please identify yourself by SL name in any correspondence.
